Award Recipients

Each year, scholarship recipients are invited to Washington, DC for a special awards dinner hosted by ICMA-RC. As a special honor, ICMA-RC President and CEO Joan McCallen, who also serves as President of the Scholarship Fund, presents each student with a certificate of achievement and wishes them a successful school year.

This year, 16 of the 2007-2008 scholarship recipients [Read previous recipient profiles] and their families joined us for this special scholarship awards dinner, held annually at Union Station in Washington, DC. In addition to the awards dinner, students were invited to participate in a special day trip prior to the evening ceremony.

ICMA-RC sponsored the tour to give the scholarship recipients and their families an opportunity to sightsee Washington, DC and visit some of the memorials that pay tribute to the lives the Scholarship Fund honors.

During the tour, students visited the District of Columbia Engine 3 Station House, where a life-size replica of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial is housed. They also had an opportunity to see the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and take a tour of the U.S. Capitol.

Later that evening, U.S. Fire Administration Chief Gregory Cade provided the keynote address at the dinner [See photos taken at the 2007 awards dinner] and told the recipients their loss would never be forgotten. He emphasized the role education played in his own career and congratulated the recipients on their achievement.

ICMA-RC president and CEO Joan McCallen told the gathering, “These awards are both a testament to your hard work and a memorial to the lost fathers and spouses who died in the line of duty working in the public sector. It’s that special commitment you bring with you this evening that makes this event among my most treasured moments as president and CEO of ICMA-RC.”
