Summer Break

Chart of the Week for June 4-10, 1999

Is it true that stocks go on vacation during the three months of summer? According to the returns of the S&P 500 between June 1st and August 31st during the past four years, there is merit to this belief. It is important to point out, however, that in 1996 and in 1998 where the return for the summer was negative, both time periods did have significant upward moves at some point. The lesson to remember is to invest for the long haul. If an investor had jumped out of the stock market on August 31, 1998 after the S&P 500 was down 13% over the previous 12 days, he/she would have missed the 28.4% increase over the next four months.
