Market indexes can be useful indicators of performance. Many are calculated based on the market capitalization of their component companies; the largest companies dominate these cap-weighted indexes. Alternatively, indexes may be calculated on an equal-weighted basis. Under this method all companies, regardless of size, have an equal effect on performance. Results from these two methodologies will vary. For example, the Wilshire 5000 tracks stocks for all publicly traded companies headquartered in the U.S. Comparing the two alternatives, performance is lower under the cap-weighted method than under the equal-weighted method indicating smaller stocks are outperforming larger stocks.
