How Will the Year End?

Chart of the Week for December 10-16, 2004

Performance of Nasdaq Composite Index vs. S&P 500 Index, summers 1998-2003

As the uncertainties in 2004 fade and holiday merrymaking gets underway, investors are gaining some optimism from the stock market. Since 1994, the month of December has experienced 8 monthly positive returns— leaving only two Decembers falling into negatives. As of December 9th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is seeing a return of 0.63% for the month to date. How the month will end and what will happen in 2005 is of course unknown, but shoppers are hoping to spread a little extra good cheer again this December.
