For twenty-two years, PNC Advisors has charted the cost of the goods and services given as gifts in the classic holiday song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” This year it would cost $75,122 to give “that special someone” all of the gifts, including the repeats, as detailed in the verses of the song. This is an increase of 3.5% from the total price tag in 2005.
PNC Bank gives the following statistics and explanations for the price fluctuations. The largest percentage price increase of all the items included in the index was the Pear Tree, whose price rose by 44% since last year. This is in response to strong commercial construction, which has lifted demand for ornamental trees in the landscaping business. The biggest dollar increase was the Nine Ladies Dancing, who now earn $4,759 compared to $4,576 in 2005, due to higher labor costs from a historically low unemployment rate. Although not part of the total price tag, shoppers who purchase these gifts over the Internet will spend a 67% premium over those who choose to shop in the more traditional manner.
Happy holidays!
