The True Cost of The Twelve Days of Christmas
(Including Repetitions)

Chart of the Week for December 5, 2008 - December 11, 2008

Bar chart of the total cost for the items listed in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas"

For twenty-four years, PNC Wealth Management ("PNC") has charted the cost of the goods and services given as gifts in the classic "Twelve Days of Christmas" holiday song. This year it would cost $86,609 to give "that special someone" all of the gifts, including the repeats, as detailed in the verses of the song. This is an increase of almost 11% from the total price tag in 2007.

PNC gives the following statistics and explanations for the price fluctuations. The largest price increase of all the items included in the index was the seven swans-a-swimming, whose price rose $1,400 or 33% since last year. This is in response to their scarcity. The price increase for swans was somewhat offset by the price decrease for geese as the six geese-a-laying fell $120 or 33%. Although not part of the total price tag, shoppers who purchase these gifts over the Internet will spend a little more compared to those who choose to shop in the more traditional manner. Generally, internet prices are somewhat higher due to shipping costs for items such as live birds.

Happy holidays!
