President Bush Nominated Long-time Aide to Senate Banking Committee Chairman Shelby

On June 1, 2006, President Bush nominated Kathleen Casey to fill one of the three Republican spots on the Securities and Exchange Commission, replacing Cynthia Glassman, who announced earlier this week that she did not intend to serve a second term. Casey’s nomination is expected to be confirmed by the Senate with bi-partisan support.

Casey, a graduate of Penn State University, has worked for Shelby since 1993, and has served as staff director and counsel to the full committee since 2003. She is considered an expert on banking and securities law. Her nomination was lauded on both sides of the aisle. Banking ranking member Paul Sarbanes, (D-MD), said Casey was an “excellent” staff director and would support her nomination, adding that she would make a “very able” commissioner. Casey also has support in the banking and financial services industries.

A Shelby spokesman said Casey will stay on as director pending her confirmation, helping Shelby push through some legislative priorities. Shelby is not expected to name a replacement until Casey is confirmed.
